This coming Saturday from 10am until 2pm there will be a work party at Birchwood Elementary to finish getting the school garden ready for Spring!  Bring the family and come on out to support our neighborhood school.

Below is a list of things needed from Laura Phipps, the volunteer coordinator for the Birchwood School Garden.

Birchwood School Garden Wish List:

(We ask that all of these items be gently used and in good shape.

And we thank you!!)

3 wheelbarrows

8 watering cans (with diffused spray ends, I don’t know quite what to call it)

hoses

3 forks

2 leaf rakes

2 metal rakes

5 shovels

2 spades

Pruners

Loppers

More gloves (surprisingly, we can use more gloves, especially bigger kid gloves)

Tarps (large, clean)

Lots of cardboard (this is a time sensitive item.  We need cardboard on or beforeApril 3rd, the day of our work party)

The Small Potatoes Gleaning Project has collected 100,000lbs of fresh produce for Whatcom County Food Banks this year. You can read the article here.

What an amazing project and it benefits so many! If you have home grown produce that you are not going to be able to eat please consider giving these folks a call and putting it to good use.
